Spotify is expanding its Notes feature with a new option called Playlist Notes. The feature gives playlist editors a way to explain their song choices and highlight their cultural relevance. The notes will be written by Spotify’s global team of playlist editors. Users can open a major playlist and tap the Notes button at the top to read the editors’ comments.
Spotify is limiting playlist notes at launch to users aged 16 and older in the US, Canada, the UK, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand. The company has not said when the feature will reach other regions. Users can also learn more about the people behind Spotify’s playlists. Tapping an editor’s name opens their editor profile, which provides more information about the person curating the playlist.
Spotify is also giving users more control over their own notes. On Android and iOS, users can tap the three dots beside a track and select “Add note.” The note will then appear below the song.
Unlike Playlist Notes, the personal notes feature is available in more than 100 regions. It also works on both Android and iOS devices, making it accessible to a much wider audience.
The feature could be useful for more than just music. Spotify users can write reminders or thoughts about their favorite tracks. It may also help people keep notes while listening to podcasts and audiobooks.
There is one important privacy detail to remember. Personal notes can be seen by anyone the user has shared the playlist with. This means users should avoid adding anything they would not want other playlist members to read.
Spotify first introduced related features such as Running Mode and User Notes last month. With Playlist Notes, the company is now giving both its editors and listeners more ways to add context to the content they hear.
