Slim smartphones are losing momentum fast, and the impact is now spreading across the industry. Apple’s iPhone Air, once pitched as a sleek new direction for the lineup, is struggling to gain traction in the market. As a result, several Chinese manufacturers are backing away from their own ultra-thin projects. A new report says Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo have cancelled their upcoming slim devices, which were meant to challenge the iPhone Air.
The slowdown is already affecting Apple’s supply chain. Foxconn has reduced its iPhone production lines, and Luxshare has stopped iPhone production altogether. Apple is also facing internal changes, since the Air’s designer recently left the company, and the next Air model is reportedly delayed.
Samsung appears to be seeing the same trend. The Galaxy S25 Edge is also underperforming, and Samsung has reportedly cancelled its successor. The cooling demand suggests that ultra-slim phones may not become the category shift many companies were expecting.
