Google has quietly introduced the Android 17 Beta 4 build, and it may be pointing to a new direction for its Pixel lineup. Fresh findings in the update suggest the company is testing a feature that could bring LED lighting to the back of future devices.
The feature, referred to as Pixel Glow, appears in early code within Android 17. It seems to work as a notification system that uses LED lights. This approach mirrors the front-facing notification lights seen on older smartphones.
Moreover, a screenshot shared in the report offers a clearer look at how it may function. Pixel Glow could use colored lights on the rear panel to alert users about incoming notifications. This would be especially useful when the phone is placed face down.
However, the feature may not always stay active. Reports indicate that it will not appear when Flash notifications are turned on. At the same time, code strings suggest that Pixel Glow will need dedicated lighting hardware built into the device.
Beyond basic alerts, the feature could support several smart use cases. For instance, it may show subtle lighting for calls from favorite contacts. It could also provide visual feedback during hands-free use. In addition, users might see gentle light effects when interacting with Gemini.
That said, there is still some uncertainty around its final design. Leaked renders of the Pixel 11, Pixel 11 Pro, and Pixel 11 Pro XL do not show any visible rear lighting hardware. As a result, it remains unclear how Google plans to bring Pixel Glow to life.
