Instagram has introduced stronger content protections for teenagers in Pakistan, automatically placing all users under 18 into a updated, restricted account setting.
Teens placed in this setting will not be permitted to opt out independently, as any change to these restrictions will require direct approval from a parent.
The updated 13+ setting draws inspiration from age-appropriate movie rating criteria, aiming to provide teens a safer, more controlled content experience on Instagram.
Just as a 13+ rated film may contain occasional mild language, Instagram acknowledges teens may still encounter some limited mature content within the platform.
What the New Policies Cover
Under the updated policies, Instagram will now hide posts containing strong language, certain risky stunts, and content that could encourage harmful or dangerous behaviours online.
Existing protections already restricted sexually suggestive material, graphic images, and adult content including tobacco and alcohol promotions from being visible to teenage users on Instagram.
Teens will no longer be able to follow accounts regularly sharing age-inappropriate content or accounts whose names and bios suggest they are inappropriate for younger users.
Instagram has also expanded its search restrictions, now blocking mature terms such as alcohol and gore, even when those search terms are entered with deliberate misspellings.
Any link sent to a teen through direct messages that leads to age-inappropriate content will automatically be blocked, preventing the teen from opening or viewing it.
Limited Content: A Stricter Option for Parents
Instagram is introducing a new setting called Limited Content, designed specifically for parents who want a stricter experience than the standard thirteen-plus default currently offers.
The Limited Content setting filters a broader range of material and removes teenagers’ ability to see, leave, or receive any comments beneath posts on the platform.
Expanding to Facebook and Messenger
Meta is also extending these same teen content protections to Facebook and Messenger, bringing the updated settings to teenage users on those platforms globally this week.
Teens using Facebook and Messenger in Pakistan will be defaulted into the updated thirteen-plus setting this week, while the Limited Content option will follow later this year.
AI and Technology Updates
Instagram has updated its artificial intelligence experiences for teens, ensuring AI-generated responses remain appropriate and consistent with the standards set by thirteen-plus movie rating criteria.
Instagram has also improved its content detection technology, which now proactively identifies and filters age-inappropriate material across recommendations, Explore, Reels, Stories, Feed, and comments sections.
These protections were first introduced in the United Kingdom, United States, Australia, and Canada in October 2025, before being expanded to additional countries including Pakistan recently.
Instagram has stated it did not partner with the MPA ratings board and that the organisation is not endorsing, approving, or rating any content on the platform.
