Instagram has introduced a new feature called Instants, along with a dedicated companion app for it. The company describes Instants as “a new way to share in the moment” through spontaneous and unfiltered photos sent to friends.
The feature focuses on quick photo sharing with close friends or followers who follow you back. Once someone views an instant, the photo disappears for them. However, Instagram still saves the content in a private archive for up to one year. Users can later reshare these photos as a recap through Stories.
Instants now appear as a small stack of photos in the bottom-right corner of the Instagram DM inbox. Friends can react to the photos or send replies directly through DMs, making conversations more immediate and personal.
At the same time, Instagram has launched an Instants companion app for iOS and Android. The app offers faster camera access for users who want to quickly capture and share moments. For now, Instagram says the rollout is limited to select countries.
When sharing an instant, users can add a caption before posting the photo. Unlike Stories, the caption appears first. However, Instagram does not allow extra edits after sharing. Users can also decide exactly who can view each instant.
Instagram has added an Undo option as well. This lets users quickly take back a photo if they change their mind. Meanwhile, the top-right section of Instants gives users access to their personal archive, which remains visible only to them.
