Santa Monica Studio finally answered the hopes of gamers heading into the recent State of Play event. They dedicated the final showcase to a massive reveal. Fans received an official look at the brand-new title, God of War: Laufey. Furthermore, the developers treated everyone to 20 full minutes of gameplay.
Step Into the Afterlife
The new trailer immediately highlights striking graphical improvements. It opens with Kratos standing before a funeral pyre. He tells his wife, Faye, that she is free. Additionally, fans can see a noticeably young Atreus alongside him.
Following this intro, the perspective shifts completely. Players step into the shoes of Faye, also known as Laufey. She awakens, startled in a mysterious afterlife realm called the “Everywhen”. From there, her strange journey begins. She must fight her way through the afterlife of the Gods. Ultimately, her goal is to protect Kratos and Atreus back in the living world.

Gameplay entirely focuses on Faye’s unique combat style. She relies heavily on speed, control, and absolute relentlessness. Consequently, it does not take long for her to clash with aggressive, plant-like creatures.
Meanwhile, several wild rumors leading up to the event turned out to be true. Faye explores multiple mythologies. The trailer proves this by showcasing Mongolian-speaking enemies. She also gains some highly unusual allies. A small animal companion joins her on her quest. Even more surprisingly, a gelatinous cube accompanies her. Finally, the rumors of a “talking sword” proved partially correct. The game features a weapon where the intelligence actually resides in its ribbons rather than the blade itself.
God of War: Laufey Is A Bold Step Forward
This upcoming PS5 title will launch “soon”. More importantly, it looks incredibly ambitious. Earlier in 2026, the franchise shadow-dropped God of War Sons of Sparta. Critics labeled that prequel an “okay” but forgettable chapter. They complained that its safe approach felt like an outdated game from 2005 rather than a modern 2026 release.
In stark contrast, God of War: Laufey refuses to play it safe. It abandons the traditional formula to deliver an exciting, risk-taking new entry for the beloved franchise.
