Meta’s social platform Threads has crossed 500 million monthly active users, marking another major milestone for the company’s X rival. The platform has added around 100 million monthly users since August last year. While Threads initially gained attention as an alternative to X after Elon Musk acquired Twitter, the app has continued to grow and establish its own user base.
A key factor behind that growth has been its connection with Instagram. The integration made it easier for users to join Threads compared to many competing social platforms. However, Meta says the recently introduced Communities feature has also played an important role in attracting and engaging users.
To mark the 500 million user milestone, Meta is taking Communities out of beta. The company is also introducing several new tools designed to improve the community experience.
Users will now see unique icons for individual communities. A new Communities Hub is also being added to the main menu, located on the left side of the feed. The hub will make it easier for people to discover and manage communities.
Meta is also launching Community Progress. This feature shows when a popular topic is close to becoming an official community. It also explains what users can do to help the topic reach that stage. In addition, more users will receive Community Champion status. The company has also expanded native-language community tags for users in Japan, Korea, and Taiwan.
Over the coming weeks, Meta plans to bring live chats to more communities. The feature will also gain support for quoting chat moments directly to a user’s feed.
Threads is also rolling out a new personalization feature called Your Algo. The tool works alongside Dear Algo, which already allows users to tell the platform what content they want to see more or less often.
With Your Algo, users can adjust recommendations for specific topics. They can also choose how long those preferences remain active. Available options include one day, three days, or seven days.
The requests remain private and are visible only to the user. Meta has also created a unified hub where people can manage both Dear Algo and Your Algo settings in one place. Your Algo is launching today for users in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand.
