Pakistan’s transition toward solar energy continued to gain momentum in May 2026, with net-metered electricity generation reaching one of its highest levels on record despite a slight monthly decline.
According to Arif Habib Limited, net-metered electricity accounted for 4.1% of Pakistan’s total power generation in May 2026, marking an increase of 105 basis points compared to the same month last year.
The latest figures show that net-metering generation remained close to record levels, even after a 9.5% month-on-month decline following exceptionally strong solar output recorded in April.
Despite the continued growth in rooftop solar generation, overall electricity generation declined by 0.9% year-on-year in May 2026.
Looking ahead, the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) expects Pakistan’s electricity demand to increase by around 1% during calendar year 2026, reflecting steady growth in energy consumption alongside the country’s expanding renewable energy sector.
The latest data highlights Pakistan’s accelerating adoption of solar power, with net-metering continuing to play an increasingly important role in the national electricity mix.
