A discarded SpaceX Falcon 9 upper stage slammed into the Moon on August 5 at 2:35 a.m. Eastern Time, striking near Einstein Crater at approximately 8,700 kmph or 5,400 mph with the equivalent force of three tons of TNT.
Scientists confirmed it through telescope observations as NASA verified a 100% impact probability weeks in advance. Boston University researchers detected a sodium and lithium gas plume stretching tens of kilometers from the impact site using the Very Large Telescope in Chile.
None of that stopped Elon Musk from sharing a fake video of the event and letting it go viral before casually admitting it wasn’t real.
On the evening of August 5, Musk reposted an 11-second clip from Valuetainment showing a bright object slamming into the lunar surface and carving a dramatic 100-foot crater. The animation looked cinematic and convincing, but no spacecraft was positioned anywhere near the Moon to record the impact from that angle, and no camera exists on the lunar surface capable of capturing the event in real time.

The video was AI-generated, and X’s Community Notes flagged it almost immediately, clarifying that the clip was a simulation and linking verified reporting from AP News, Space.com, and The Guardian.
Hours later, Musk followed up with a second post that read “This is fake btw,” accompanied by a laughing emoji. Tech investor Robert Scoble captured the absurdity perfectly in his reply: “Billionaire bucket list item: leave a crater on the moon.”
The actual crash carried real scientific significance. The Falcon 9 second stage launched in January 2025 carrying Firefly Aerospace’s Blue Ghost and ispace’s Hakuto-R Mission 2 lunar landers, and after completing its mission, the stage drifted through space for seven months before gravity pulled it into a collision course with the Moon. Astronomer Bill Gray predicted the exact impact date back in April using his Project Pluto software, and NASA estimates the resulting crater measures roughly 60 feet wide and up to 16 feet deep, though a preprint study from nearly two dozen researchers puts the diameter closer to 65 to 90 feet. NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter is currently photographing the site, with imagery expected within two weeks.
This was only the second known accidental collision of human-made debris with the Moon, following a Chinese rocket body that carved an unusual double crater on the far side in 2022. Total human-made debris on the lunar surface now exceeds 209 tons across approximately 3,000 objects, and that number will only accelerate as NASA, China, and commercial companies pursue permanent lunar operations.
Musk’s decision to share an AI-generated animation of a real scientific event, collect millions of views, and then dismiss it with a laughing emoji hours later follows a well-established pattern on his platform. Community Notes corrected the record, but the correction inevitably reached a fraction of the audience that saw the original post.
The real footage of the crash doesn’t exist because no camera was there to capture it, and Musk filled that gap with a fabricated animation while letting virality handle the rest.
