Recently, an action-packed multiplayer trailer for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 surfaced online. The footage highlights fresh animations, attachments, and game modes. Furthermore, it showcases a massive update to the iconic tactical nuke. Historically, players sacrificed themselves in the explosion. Now, Modern Warfare 4 fixes this common criticism.
The New Modern Warfare 4 Nuke Survival Mechanic
Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games have featured numerous nukes in past titles. Usually, only the name and the required kill count changed. The count still bounces between 25 and 30 kills. However, Infinity Ward made this latest iteration truly special. After calling in the explosion, players will now hook themselves to a skyhook. Consequently, they flee the battlefield safely. Everyone else perishes in the blast. As they fly away, the escaping player even flips off the enemy team.

Besides offering a great visual, this update provides a massive gameplay benefit. It allows players to keep their flawless games intact. If a player goes 30-0 to earn the bomb, they no longer need to die unnecessarily. Therefore, the tactical nuke finally feels like a proper reward for dominating a lobby. Meanwhile, classic elements remain exactly the same. The iconic siren noise still blares upon activation. Currently, Infinity Ward has not clarified whether MW4 will use a killstreak or a scorestreak system.
Fresh Killstreaks & A Shift Away From Mil-Sim
The tactical nuke is not the only streak making waves. The trailer also reveals a gigantic drill charge missile. This massive weapon hits building roofs and burrows through several floors. Ultimately, it kills everything in its path. Additionally, a mini-gun-wielding tank drone appears in the footage. This machine heavily resembles the A.G.R. from Black Ops 2, though it looks much more grounded. Lastly, the developers showed off a futuristic-looking shotgun as a handheld killstreak.
Apart from the streaks, the footage highlights new multiplayer game modes. Players can experience an evolving battleground named Kill Block. Moreover, they can jump into a Battlefield-style Ground War. The trailer also spotlights new Apex attachments. These modifications function just like the powerful underbarrels from older Call of Duty games. Additionally, players get a highly versatile riot shield. Soldiers can hold the shield manually or deploy it as stationary cover. Overall, these mechanics suggest a return to the slower, more tactical gameplay seen in Modern Warfare 2019.
Activision and Infinity Ward previously promised visually grounded character skins for MW4. However, the new tactical nuke animation clearly adds insult to injury. By including the middle finger gesture, the developers show they want to have some fun. Ultimately, this lighthearted tone proves that Call of Duty is not stepping anywhere near strict mil-sim territory this year.
