Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is set to chair a meeting on Wednesday to decide the future of Pakistan’s long-delayed Auto Policy 2026-31, according to sources.
Sources said the prime minister is expected to lead the meeting, where the government may either approve the proposed policy or seek further deliberations before reaching a final decision.
The policy has already received in-principle approval from a committee headed by Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb Dar. The proposal is currently with the Industries and Production Secretary and the Power Division, sources said.
The government will consult the International Monetary Fund (IMF) before formally announcing the new automotive policy. Following the IMF consultation, the proposal will be submitted to the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) and subsequently the federal cabinet for approval.
The policy will come into effect after completing the required approval process.
The Auto Policy 2026-31 is expected to establish the direction of Pakistan’s automotive sector for the next five years. It will include measures related to investment, vehicle production, market development and the broader growth of the industry.
The policy is being closely watched by automakers, investors and other stakeholders as the government seeks to attract new investment and strengthen local automotive production.
