Elon Musk has once again found himself at the center of an online debate after making a blunt comment about Instagram on X. The billionaire described the photo and video-sharing platform as a place “for girls” in a short reply posted on October 1.
The remark came after Geiger Capital announced that it had removed its Instagram account. The firm said Instagram was “inherently a female app” and claimed that the platform offered “zero benefit” to its business.
Musk responded with just five words: “Instagram is for girls.”
Although the post was brief, it quickly attracted reactions from other X users. The discussion soon moved beyond Musk’s comment and focused on whether social platforms can really be defined by gender.
Officially deleted instagram.
An inherently female app. Zero benefit.

Musk’s Comment Divides X Users
The response from X users was mixed, with some people supporting Musk’s view and others strongly disagreeing with it. Several users treated the comment as a joke and suggested that X has a more male-focused audience. However, others argued that Instagram attracts users from a much wider range of backgrounds.
Instagram is now used for far more than sharing photos and videos. Businesses rely on it for marketing, while creators use it to build audiences and earn money. The platform also carries content about activism, entertainment, body positivity, inclusivity, and personal interests. That broad use has led some users to question the idea that Instagram can be tied to one gender.
One user pointed to the platform’s diverse content as evidence against Musk’s claim. Another took a more sarcastic approach and suggested that Musk may have formed the opinion after using Instagram himself.
This Is Not Musk’s First Instagram Remark
Musk has previously expressed a similar view about Instagram. Earlier this year, he reportedly criticised men who shared links to their Instagram profiles with him. During that discussion, he again linked the platform more closely with women.
His latest post has therefore brought an older argument back into the spotlight. It also highlights the different identities that have developed around major social networks.
X is often associated with text-based discussions and real-time news. Instagram, meanwhile, has built much of its identity around visual content, creators, brands, and online communities.
The Comment Comes Amid Musk’s Meta Rivalry
Musk’s latest Instagram remark also carries more context because of his long-running rivalry with Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg. The relationship between the two became more competitive after Meta introduced Threads in July 2023. The text-based platform was built around Instagram and was positioned as an alternative to X.
The launch triggered a public rivalry between Musk and Zuckerberg. Their competition has since extended into another major technology market. Musk’s xAI and Meta are now competing in artificial intelligence. Both companies are developing AI models and consumer products as they expand their presence in the sector.
For now, Musk’s latest Instagram comment remains a short social media post. However, it has once again opened a wider conversation about how users view the audiences and cultures surrounding different platforms.
