The promise of secure digital banking is currently facing intense scrutiny. Digital banking should offer convenience and peace of mind. However, recent events have deeply shattered this trust. Right now, UBL customers are facing severe security issues and unauthorized transactions. Two alarming incidents recently surfaced on social media. They expose massive vulnerabilities in the bank’s digital infrastructure. Consequently, citizens are demanding immediate answers from regulators.
The PKR 21M Nightmare of Unauthorized Transactions from UBL
The most devastating incident involves a customer from Abbottabad. On October 8, at 12:25 AM, the customer noticed a suspicious transfer. Someone moved PKR 1,000 to an Easypaisa account. Immediately, the customer called the UBL helpline. They contacted the bank three times. During these calls, the customer explicitly requested a complete block on their app and online banking. UBL assured them that the account was completely secure.
Furthermore, the nightmare was just beginning. Around 15 hours later, at 3:51 PM, massive unauthorized transactions began. The customer started receiving email alerts for PKR 1 million deductions. Frantically, the customer called UBL again. They remained on the phone with customer support for an hour while the transfers actively continued.
Ultimately, the system processed 21 separate transfers of PKR 1 million each. Scammers successfully moved PKR 21 million into five different recipient accounts. Surprisingly, the customer never received a single One-Time Password (OTP). Additionally, the system completely bypassed the standard PKR 5 million daily transfer limit. Currently, UBL states that an investigation will take up to 10 business days. Meanwhile, the customer demands immediate intervention from the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) and the NCCIA to trace and freeze their stolen life savings.
POS Deductions With the Card in Hand
Meanwhile, another customer from Multan faced a highly sophisticated attack. The victim was having dinner with family. Suddenly, SMS transaction alerts flooded their phone. The bank deducted Rs. 127,199.99 through four unauthorized VISA Point of Sale (POS) transactions.
Specifically, the deductions were Rs. 20,000, Rs. 49,999.99, Rs. 47,000, and Rs. 10,200. The shocking part is the physical location of the card. The customer had physical possession of the debit card at the time. Moreover, the UBL Digital App was securely logged in on their mobile phone. The victims never authorized these payments. Now, they are demanding a clear explanation and an immediate refund from the bank.
Public Outrage & Urgent Warnings
These incidents have sparked widespread anger across social media. The public sentiment is overwhelmingly critical of the bank’s negligence. Many people question if the banking “Block” feature actually works. Others strongly suspect internal staff involvement due to the sheer scale of the breaches. Citizens are urging victims to bypass standard bank delays. Instead, they recommend filing immediate complaints with the Banking Mohtasib Pakistan and the NCCIA.
Furthermore, people are discussing how modern technology aids these scams. Scammers might use wireless POS machines to deduct funds via NFC technology while the card sits on a table. Therefore, everyone should remain highly vigilant. Never hand your card to unknown people at restaurants or petrol stations. Always ensure attendants swipe your card directly in front of you. Technology is advancing rapidly, so protect your hard-earned money and stay alert.
