A motorcyclist set his motorcycle on fire on Thursday after a traffic warden issued him a Rs2,000 challan at Malad Chowk in Kotli Sattian. The warden had stopped the man for riding without a helmet and a registration number plate.
According to police, the motorcyclist left the spot after receiving the challan and set the vehicle on fire about 20 yards from the warden. The warden informed Rescue 1122, whose team reached the site and extinguished the fire.
No casualties were reported. Police later recorded the statement of the owner.
The owner said he set the motorcycle on fire while in distress over domestic problems and debt, and that he was on his way to earn a livelihood when he was stopped. He expressed regret and said he would follow traffic rules in the future.
The chief traffic officer in Murree has urged citizens to obey traffic rules, wear helmets while riding motorcycles, and use the prescribed number plates on their vehicles.
