The University of Karachi has barred its teaching and non-teaching staff from uploading or forwarding university-related information or official documents on social media without prior permission from the competent authority.
The ban was issued through a notification signed by Registrar Dr Imran Ahmed Siddiqui.
It states that the administration found official letters and office orders being shared in social media groups without authorisation. These included documents on transfers and postings, additional charges and suspensions of employees and officers.
Under the notification, employees must not upload or forward any official document or information on social media platforms, or share it with any unauthorised person, unless the competent authority has approved it beforehand.
The administration warned that any violation will be taken seriously and may lead to disciplinary action under applicable laws, including action under Rule 18 of the Government Servants (Conduct) Rules, 1964.
Information intended for public release will be shared only through the official social media pages of the university or other authorised channels.
Days earlier, during a meeting of vice chancellors of Sindh public universities chaired by the Sindh chief secretary, one university head had proposed a review of the Right of Access to Information Act. The chief secretary did not take up the proposal.
