Amazon Games has officially pushed back Tomb Raider: Catalyst to 2028. The highly anticipated entry set in India will no longer launch in 2027. Consequently, fans expecting a double-feature of Tomb Raider games next year must adjust their expectations.
A Longer Wait for Tomb Raider: Catalyst
Amazon Games general manager Jeffrey Gattis confirmed the delay quietly. During a recent interview with The Game Business regarding the Luna streaming service, Gattis stated the game will follow on in 2028. However, he did not provide an exact release date.
This brand-new adventure marks the first mainline game since Shadow of the Tomb Raider wrapped up the survivor trilogy in 2018. Furthermore, Catalyst promises a “unified” Lara Croft. Players will control an older, sassier protagonist who has experienced both the original adventures and the Survivor timeline.
The game runs on Unreal Engine 5. Therefore, it guarantees beautiful graphics, though this engine choice raises some performance concerns among fans. Additionally, the developers promise the “largest” game in franchise history. Players will battle mysterious forces, solve intricate puzzles, and explore lost tombs packed with fantastical elements.
Throne of Atlantis Keeps 2027 Alive
Fortunately, 2027 will not remain entirely empty. The Tomb Raider: Throne of Atlantis remake officially retains its locked-in February 12, 2027 release date. This title allows players to explore a modern take on a mythical civilization and battle detailed dinosaurs.
However, Throne of Atlantis faced heavy backlash recently. Gamers discovered the use of AI assets during early development. Amazon Games insists that human artists have since replaced all AI work. Still, that initial usage remains a strict breaking point for a segment of the gaming community.
Amazon’s Balancing Act & the TV Show
Amazon Games currently faces intense scrutiny. Alongside the AI controversy, the publisher recently sparked panic over the future of IOI’s 007 games before eventually walking back their statements. Because of this mounting tension, the developer must ensure Catalyst sticks the landing upon release.
On the bright side, the Tomb Raider IP still promises plenty of media. Amazon is currently filming a live-action Tomb Raider series starring Sophie Turner. Viewers can assume this show will arrive in late 2027. Ultimately, this television release will fill the void left by Catalyst, ensuring fans still have a packed schedule to look forward to.
