The federal government has officially declared June 25 and June 26, 2026, as public holidays across Pakistan on the occasion of 9th and 10th Muharram-ul-Haram (Ashura).
The decision was approved by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, following which the Cabinet Division issued a formal notification announcing the two-day holiday nationwide.
According to the notification, all federal government offices operating under both five-day and six-day work schedules will remain closed on Thursday and Friday in observance of Ashura. The holidays correspond to 9 and 10 Muharram 1448 Hijri, which are among the most significant dates in the Islamic calendar.
The announcement comes as authorities across the country intensify preparations for Muharram processions and religious gatherings. Provincial administrations, law enforcement agencies, and local authorities are finalizing security and traffic management plans to ensure the peaceful conduct of majalis and processions.
Public institutions, government departments, and many educational establishments are expected to remain closed during the two-day holiday period.
Ashura is observed annually to commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussain and his companions in the Battle of Karbala. The occasion is marked by mourning processions, religious gatherings, and special prayers throughout Pakistan.
With the latest notification, citizens are set to enjoy a long weekend as the country observes one of the most important religious events of the Islamic year.
