Instagram has officially launched Instagram Plus, a new optional add-on subscription priced at $3.99 per month in the US. The package includes 11 features designed to give power users more control over stories, profiles, and analytics, while Meta insists the core Instagram experience stays completely free.
As explained by Instagram:
“Instagram Plus offers exclusive features to help you express yourself, connect deeper with friends, and customize your experience in new ways. The Instagram you know and love today isn’t changing and will always be free; this new subscription is simply an optional upgrade for people who want more control, deeper insights, and premium features.”
Story Spotlight lets subscribers push their story to the front of the Stories tray for followers, usable once per week. Story Extend adds 24 hours of extra life to any story to maximize reach. Multiple Story Audiences lets users create unlimited segmented audience lists beyond the standard Close Friends option. Story Preview is arguably the most eyebrow-raising feature. It lets subscribers view other people’s stories completely anonymously, without appearing in the viewer list.
On the analytics side, Story Rewatch Insights shows how many times a story was rewatched. Search Viewer List lets users search their story viewer list to check if a specific account has seen their content. Super Hearts delivers animated hearts that burst across the screen when reacting to friends’ stories.
Profile customization gets a bump too. Subscribers can pin up to 6 posts to their profile grid instead of the standard 3, use a custom bio font to match personal branding, and choose from alternate app icons designed by Instagram and creators.
A Post Directly to Profile option lets subscribers upload to their grid or highlights without the post appearing in followers’ feeds, useful for organizing content quietly.
Meta makes 98% of its revenue from advertising, which limits how transformative any paid tier can realistically be. Historical take-up for similar offerings is low. Fewer than 1% of X users pay for X Premium and around 4.5% of YouTube’s base pays for YouTube Premium.
Meta likely expects Instagram Plus to attract roughly 2% of its billion-plus user base, generating a meaningful but niche additional revenue stream as the company pours capital into AI development.
