The Sindh government has approved the construction of a modern terminal for trucks, trailers, and other heavy-loading vehicles outside Karachi as part of a broader plan to improve traffic management and urban transport infrastructure.
The decision was taken during a meeting of the Sindh Mass Transit Authority chaired by Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon, where multiple transport and infrastructure projects were reviewed and approved.
According to officials, the new heavy vehicle terminal will be established on the Northern Bypass, along with a dedicated heavy traffic corridor connecting Karachi Port to the terminal. Authorities say the project is aimed at reducing congestion inside Karachi and improving the movement of cargo vehicles.
Sharjeel Memon stated that the initiative would help streamline heavy traffic flow and ease pressure on the city’s road network.
The meeting also approved the launch of an electric vehicle (EV) taxi service in Karachi, with authorities directed to accelerate the financial evaluation process for the project.
In another major development, the Sindh government approved the purchase of 50 new double-decker buses for Karachi’s public transport system. Officials said each bus would have the capacity to accommodate 126 passengers.
Authorities further approved the procurement of 500 additional pink EV scooters for women. The scooters are scheduled to be distributed in Hyderabad on May 22 as part of the government’s women empowerment initiative.
The board also cleared the purchase of 500 electric buses under a public-private partnership model. Of these, 450 buses will operate on 25 routes in Karachi, while 50 buses will serve five routes in Hyderabad.
Additionally, the Sindh government approved plans to establish five modern EV depots across the province, including four in Karachi and one in Hyderabad.
The meeting also endorsed the construction of a one-story parking plaza near Mola Ali Qadam Gah in Hyderabad and decided that future traffic signals across Sindh would operate using solar power.
