Pakistani telecom operator Mobilink has signed up as a founding member of a program by GSMA to simply online sign-ups.

Available to almost 2 billion people around the globe, Mobile Connect is a program started by the GSM Association (GSMA) that aims to allow the users of a mobile phone to log-in/register to multiple online services using just their mobile phone and in a bid to simplify the Digital experience and making internet onboarding easy for a largely unconnected population, Mobilink has gone ahead with GSMA’s Mobile Connect as a de-facto enabler for seamless online experiences.

“We’ve chosen Mobile Connect to simplify the lives of our 36 million plus subscribers by offering a single mobile identity at the core of our online experience. It addresses the vulnerability of online passwords, while also respecting online privacy,” said the Chief Commercial Officer at Mobilink, Aamir Ibrahim.

After analyzing user behaviors on mobile, GSMA found out that a whopping 86% of people leave a website when asked to register, making it a major barrier to entry. As a result, they developed Mobile Connect and by simply matching the user to their mobile phone, the service allows them to log-in to websites and applications quickly without the need to remember passwords and usernames. It’s safe, secure and no personal information is shared without permission. It is a universal log-in solution, and opens up doors for easy sign-up, authentication, consent based attribution and on the fly authorization of transactions.

“Forcing users to create e-mails as their identifiers and remembering multiple passwords adds a layer of complexity that makes it very hard to connect to services online,” said Maaz Zahid, Head of Digital Channels at Mobilink. “A mobile-based authentication solution makes the online experience much simpler, secure and easy.”

Mobilink, being the first network from Pakistan and also amongst the first few globally to come onboard with Mobile Connect, believes this to be a positive step in taking Mobile Identity to the heart of all Digital Engagements. Through the adoption of this solution to for its subscriber, Mobilink looks to open up a whole new set of possibilities over online retail, financial transactions and platform signups.

The decision to be a part of this global initiative was also made keeping in mind Mobilink’s commitment to a digitalized nation by empowering locals to embrace a digital lifestyle, while protecting its subscribers from the growing number of fraudulent activities and scams online.

The service is live right now for Mobilink subscribers can sign up to online services like Rozee.Pk and Homeshopping.Pk through Mobile Connect. They are also promising to add more new service providers in the near future.
