Infinity Ward is bringing the riot shield back in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. However, the developer is making a massive change to the controversial weapon. Following the recent Modern Warfare 4 launch reveal, we now know the shield is entirely destructible. Consequently, players will face a drastically different multiplayer experience.
The End of Riot Shield Campers
The riot shield has frustrated the Call of Duty community since 2009’s Modern Warfare 2. Historically, players used the shield to turtle in corners. Opponents often needed grenades or a lucky backstab to eliminate them. Furthermore, encountering a shield user instantly killed a player’s momentum.
Fortunately, Modern Warfare 4 solves this problem. The riot shield is completely destructible. Therefore, corner campers can no longer hide safely for an entire match. If they turtle too long, enemies will simply break their shields and compromise their position. Ultimately, the weapon loses its greatest defensive strength.
Modern Warfare 4 additional things:
Ninja is a perk again.
Map voting.
Destructible riot shield.
Theater mode.
Campaign playable offline.
Ability to compile shaders offline.
Changes to COD app will happen.

Offline Campaign & Classic Perks Return
Infinity Ward is making several other highly requested changes. Most notably, players can play the Modern Warfare 4 campaign completely offline. Previously, Black Ops 7 drew heavy criticism for forcing an online connection during its single-player story.
Meanwhile, the campaign brings back fan-favorite characters Captain Price and Ghost. The duo will navigate a global conflict sparked by North Korea invading South Korea.
On the multiplayer side, the developer is reworking movement mechanics and updating hip firing. Moreover, classic features are returning. The Ninja perk is back. Map voting returns. Additionally, players will finally get Theater mode back to record their matches.
UI Overhauls & Modern Warfare 4 Nintendo Launch
The game will feature a completely new user interface. The game introduces a left pull-out menu and focuses heavily on verticality across the board. Furthermore, PC players can compile shaders offline, and changes are coming to the COD companion app. Currently, Infinity Ward is staying quiet on whether Skill-Based Matchmaking (SBMM) will return.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 officially launches on October 23, 2026. The game will also release day-and-date on a Nintendo console. Overall, early previews remain incredibly positive, with reviewers calling this entry much fresher than previous titles.
