ASUS Republic of Gamers has announced preorders for the ROG XREAL R1 gaming glasses revealing an $849 price tag for what the companies call the world’s first 240Hz micro-OLED AR gaming glasses.
Best Buy has began accepting preorders while the XREAL online store opens preorders later with worldwide shipping starting June 1, according to company announcements.
The glasses feature Sony 0.55-inch micro-OLED displays with 700 nits maximum brightness delivering 240Hz refresh rate and ultra-fast 0.01ms response time. The refresh rate is double what most AR glasses offer which typically max out at 120Hz according to industry specifications. The ROG XREAL R1 creates a 171-inch virtual screen using micro-OLED panels at 1080p resolution.
The glasses weigh just 91 grams and connect to devices using USB-C or through the bundled ROG Control Dock. The dock lets users switch between three connected devices including two via HDMI 2.0 and one through DisplayPort 1.4 allowing quick switches between consoles and PCs. With a 57-degree field of view the glasses cover 95% of the human focus area according to ASUS specifications.
The $849 price is $200 higher than XREAL’s One Pro glasses which retail for $649 with the main differences being the upgraded 240Hz refresh rate and bundled ROG Control Dock. The glasses and dock are not sold separately meaning the $849 price covers both items together.
ASUS stated the R1 reaches peak potential when paired with the ROG Ally handheld console. The glasses feature Bose-tuned onboard speakers and electrochromic dimming with three levels to shield eyes from ambient light. Best Buy customers can place orders now with pickups beginning later this month while XREAL store preorders open with worldwide availability following shortly after.
