Mozilla released Firefox 151 adding highly requested feature to its free built-in VPN allowing users to pick their favorite server location. The company launched free-to-use Firefox VPN just two months ago but already more than one million people signed up to try it. Not having location selector was big restriction so this move brings experience closer in line with paid VPN services.
Firefox users in United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Canada can now choose to browse from any of countries where VPN support launched. By default, Firefox recommends closest location but users can change it any time. Previously, Mozilla selected server automatically based on proximity without giving users control over location choice.
The biggest difference is users can now use VPN for browsing region-specific content instead of just using it for privacy. This includes streaming but 50GB monthly data limit will get used up quickly through this kind of heavy usage. Firefox VPN protects traffic inside browser only not network activity from operating system as whole.
Mozilla stated with addition of location selection, one of most requested features from Firefox community, free built-in VPN now delivers all flexibility and functionality people expect from modern VPN. Users want to view local news, shop regionally, or see how content appears in different locations. Browsing remains subject to local laws and content restrictions of selected region.
Despite these improvements, it seems like some people will still find a fault in everything. Reddit erupted with all the reasons not to use Firefox free VPN. One user said:

The advice here has some merits to it, but it remains to be seen how much data is actually shared via browsers, about which limited data is verified.
Firefox introduced free built-in VPN in March 2026 as IP-protection feature designed to keep users more private while browsing.
The browser offers industry-leading 50 gigabytes of free VPN-browsing each month. Anyone wanting more features and immediate access can upgrade to Mozilla VPN or another paid VPN service which provides system-level protection.
