Apple is reportedly planning a major upgrade for the iPhone 18 Pro camera system, according to a well-known source on Weibo who claims the information is “confirmed.” The upcoming change is expected to bring a noticeable shift in the device’s rear design.
The main camera module on the iPhone 18 Pro is said to become physically larger than the one on its predecessor. Due to this change, the camera bump thickness may increase by around 2mm. This adjustment points to a more advanced and complex camera setup.
Reports suggest that the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max could feature a variable aperture system. This upgrade may be one of the main reasons for the larger camera housing. In addition, Apple might also increase the size of the main image sensor. Both factors would naturally require more internal space.
As a result, the camera system is expected to deliver improved performance in different lighting conditions. However, Apple has not officially confirmed any of these details yet, and the design could still change before launch.
Meanwhile, the iPhone 18 series is expected to follow a split release timeline. The iPhone 18 Pro models, along with a new iPhone Ultra, are likely to launch in September. In contrast, the standard iPhone 18, iPhone 18e, and possibly the iPhone Air 2 may arrive next spring.
