Apple’s first foldable iPhone may come with a larger battery than previously expected. A new leak suggests the device could feature a 5,000 mAh battery, putting it in line with some of Samsung’s upcoming foldable phones.
According to the source on Weibo, one of Apple’s regular battery suppliers recently certified two batteries at the same time. This usually happens with foldable smartphones because they use a split battery design due to their folding form factor.
The two batteries reportedly have rated capacities of 1,921 mAh and 2,962 mAh. Combined, they offer a total rated capacity of 4,883 mAh. However, smartphone makers typically advertise the higher typical capacity instead of the rated figure. As a result, the foldable iPhone is expected to carry a marketed battery capacity of around 5,000 mAh.
The device is widely rumored to launch as the iPhone Ultra, Apple’s first foldable smartphone. If the leak proves accurate, the battery capacity would match the rumored battery size of Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra.
Interestingly, the two devices are expected to have different display proportions. The Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra is said to be the successor to last year’s Galaxy Z Fold7. Meanwhile, Samsung’s direct rival to Apple’s foldable phone is expected to be the standard Galaxy Z Fold8, which is rumored to feature a 4,800 mAh battery.
A 5,000 mAh battery could give Apple’s foldable device a competitive advantage in battery life, especially in a category where larger displays often increase power consumption.
Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone Ultra in September. The foldable phone is also expected to debut alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. Some earlier reports suggested that Apple’s foldable iPhone could face delays. However, the latest reports indicate that the company remains on track for a September launch.
If the rumors are correct, the iPhone Ultra could become one of Apple’s biggest hardware launches in recent years and mark the company’s entry into the foldable smartphone market.
