Developer Cold Symmetry has officially locked in the launch for its upcoming dark fantasy game. Mortal Shell 2 will hit the market on August 20, 2026. Initially revealed at Summer Game Fest 2025, the highly anticipated sequel to the underrated 2020 Mortal Shell arrives just over a year after its first announcement.

The Harbinger & Shell Mechanics
Players will step into the boots of the Harbinger. You must seek out the bodies of fallen warriors. These bodies serve as your titular “Mortal Shells”. Consequently, you can possess them to take on their unique weapons and abilities.
Furthermore, this class-like system allows you to swap playstyles on the fly. The sequel features eight playable Shells in total. Currently, the developer has confirmed four specific warriors:
- Harros the Vassal
- Tiel the Acolyte
- Eredrim the Venerable
- Proxima the Broodseeker
Additionally, the game’s signature “Harden” defensive mechanic returns. You will need to master it to survive critical attacks from a much wider variety of bosses.
Mortal Shell 2: A Massive Content Leap
The original 2020 game earned a reputation as an underrated gem. However, it suffered from a short runtime and some rough edges. Cold Symmetry plans to polish the experience completely.
Therefore, Mortal Shell 2 delivers a massive upgrade in scale. The standalone action-RPG features 60 complete dungeons. Players will explore an interconnected dark fantasy world. Your ultimate goal is to dethrone false gods and redeem a ravaged land.
Did you play the Open Beta back in June? Fortunately, your first three hours of progress will carry over directly into the full release.
Mortal Shell 2 launches on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. However, physical game collectors should note a specific catch. Only the PlayStation 5 will receive a physical disc edition. Meanwhile, newcomers might want to check their Epic Games Store libraries. The original Mortal Shell was previously given away as a freebie.
Ultimately, soulslike fans have a packed schedule this year. Mortal Shell 2 steps into a crowded arena alongside Valor Mortis, Phantom Blade Zero, and FromSoftware’s The Duskbloods. Nevertheless, its unique mechanics aim to differentiate it from massive genre heavyweights like Dark Souls, Elden Ring, Nioh 3, and Lies of P.
