Spotify’s QR code verification for Family plans is now official. Co-CEO Alex Norström confirmed the rollout during the company’s October 22 earnings call. Specifically, he called it a routine improvement of Spotify’s verification methods. In addition, he said the system has no end date.
The new verification process targets Family plan members who may not live with the plan manager. Spotify’s Family terms require all six members to reside at the same address. However, enforcement has historically relied on address checks that users could easily spoof.
The QR system works through a short in-person scan. First, the plan manager opens their profile picture, then taps Your Premium, then Manage. The system then shows a QR code that changes every few seconds. In addition, the Family member scans the code using their phone camera inside the mobile app.
Spotify requires both people to be in the same place for the scan. As a result, screenshots and remote verification do not work. However, Reddit users have reported that multiple devices and video calls can still get around the process.
Members have exactly seven days to complete the scan once Spotify asks them to verify. Furthermore, members who miss the window cannot join any Family or Duo plan for 12 months. They can still get an Individual plan during that period.
The rollout has already reached the United States and Kenya. For instance, Kenyan users see the QR verification in Spotify’s local support page. However, Spotify has not published a global country list, and the company has not confirmed Pakistani availability yet.

User response has been sharply critical. Specifically, Reddit users have called the household requirement greedy and unfair. One user noted that Apple Family does not require shared addresses and that YouTube Premium allows family members across states.
For Pakistani Spotify Premium users, the QR verification could become a serious issue. Many Pakistani families share Family plans across multiple households, cities, and countries. In addition, Pakistani students studying abroad often rely on the plan manager back home. However, Spotify’s QR requirement would break these common sharing arrangements as soon as it reaches Pakistan.
Pakistani users should prepare in advance. For example, they can switch extended family members to Individual plans before Spotify asks for verification. Furthermore, they can keep the Family plan reserved for members who actually live in the same household.
