The Capital Development Authority (CDA) on Sunday launched the “Plastic-Free Islamabad” initiative to reduce plastic pollution and promote a cleaner, greener and more sustainable federal capital.
According to a CDA statement, assistant commissioners will monitor their respective areas to ensure the initiative’s implementation. Plastic bags have been banned in Islamabad for years, but they remain in use in several parts of the city.
The initiative aims to raise public awareness of the environmental harm caused by single-use plastics. It encourages citizens, traders, businesses, educational institutions and food outlets to switch to reusable and eco-friendly alternatives.
Special attention will be given to markets, commercial areas, food outlets, educational institutions, parks, recreational areas and other public places, where public and business cooperation is considered essential to reducing plastic waste.
The CDA has asked traders to cut the distribution of single-use plastic bags and offer customers reusable alternatives. Citizens have been urged to refuse single-use plastics, carry reusable bags, avoid unnecessary plastic packaging and dispose of waste properly.
The authority said the initiative is expected to improve quality of life and public well-being for residents and visitors. It added that reducing plastic waste would help keep streets, markets, parks, public spaces and drainage systems cleaner, and support better waste management.
