Gmail for web is finally getting Google’s Material Design and some other useful new features.
Google introduced Material Design with the launch of Android 5.0 Lollipop and people loved it. Google then slowly rolled out the design to all of its products and now finally Gmail is getting it and some early screenshots show the new design looks really great. The UI is considerably cleaner and much more minimalist. The tabs names on the left side have also been replaced by some good looking icons.

However, the Social, Promotion, and Updates tabs are not visible. Maybe Google decided to remove them. Contacts and tasks are now clearly visible. Here’s the screenshot of the new UI.
Along with the new UI upgrade, Gmail is also introducing some new features including Smart Reply, Smart Groupings, and the ability to snooze emails.
Smart Reply generates some possible messages which Google thinks you would want to reply to a specific email. You can choose one of the messages and reply instantly. Smart Grouping automatically groups emails into certain categories so that your inbox looks cleaner. Email snoozing lets you snooze the emails for a specific period of time or when you arrive at a certain place.
Material Design is now 3-years-old and Google took a lot of time to bring it to Gmail. But better late than never.
