The official Japanese Pokemon news account on X recently announced a brand-new spin-off title. The Pokemon Company and Yoka Games are officially teaming up to release a new tabletop game. They call the project “Are You, Perhaps, a Rocket Grunt?” Furthermore, the game will launch in Japan in November 2026. Currently, a worldwide release remains unconfirmed, but it might happen in the future.
A New Social Deduction Experience
Specific details about the gameplay remain sparse right now. However, the game’s title strongly implies a social deduction format. Therefore, players can expect mechanics similar to Among Us or the classic Werewolf board game. If true, this marks the Pokemon franchise’s very first step into the social deduction genre.
Additionally, the official announcement teaser reveals a hooded trainer with an obscured face. This mysterious figure stands next to a Pikachu and a Koffing. As fans know, Koffing is a signature Pokemon for Team Rocket. The teaser image also displays two distinct in-game cards. Both cards feature Pikachu and a trainer sending the electric mouse into battle.
New Pokemon Tabletop Game Expanding the Team Rocket Legacy
Unsurprisingly, the game focuses entirely on Team Rocket. This infamous criminal organization first appeared in the Kanto Region during the Gen 1 games. Later, they returned as antagonists in Gen 2’s Johto Region. In the games, grunts steal strong Pokemon for their boss, Giovanni. Consequently, Giovanni uses these stolen assets for his grand plans involving the Legendary Pokemon Mewtwo. Interestingly, older players might remember a specific grunt trying to recruit them after a battle on Nugget Bridge. Moreover, the anime famously features the trio of Jessie, James, and Meowth constantly pursuing Ash and Pikachu.
Recently, Team Rocket has received significant attention across the franchise. Last year, Japan launched the Glory of Team Rocket TCG set, which featured cards from the English Destined Rivals set. Also, the villains played a prominent role in the Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen Nintendo Switch re-releases earlier this year on Pokemon Day.
A Massive 30th Anniversary Year
This upcoming tabletop game continues a massive 30th-anniversary celebration for the series. First, Pokemon Pokopia launched in March and quickly became the highest-rated Pokemon game ever. Fans can even find references to Team Rocket inside it. Then, Pokemon Champions successfully brought competitive battling to Switch and mobile users.
Meanwhile, the Pokemon TCG released the Ascended Heroes, Perfect Order, and Chaos Rising sets. Furthermore, a special 30th Celebration TCG set will arrive this September. Finally, fans looking forward to the Gen 10 mainline games, Pokemon Winds and Waves, will have to wait until late 2027.
