A brand-new co-op horror game is currently making massive waves across the internet. Released just two days ago on July 22, 2026, Shift at Midnight has already secured a strong 90% “Very Positive” rating on Steam. Solo developer Bun Muen created this unique title, which seamlessly blends horror, detective work, and co-op chaos. The game initially exploded in popularity after prominent content creators like Markiplier and CaseOh streamed its demo. Now, players are actively diving into the full release.
A Unique Blend of Co-Op Horror & Game Strategy
Shift at Midnight drops up to three players into a 1993 American convenience store. However, this is not a standard business simulator. Unknown entities surround the store, creating an intense atmosphere heavily compared to Stephen King’s novella, The Mist. Players must keep the business running while actively hunting for disguised doppelgangers.
Specifically, you must carefully cross-examine customer IDs. You also need to inspect their physical appearances for subtle, non-human traits. If you spot a monster, you must immediately draw your gun and eliminate the threat to survive. Consequently, fans heavily compare the gameplay mechanics to “Papers, Please” and “Five Nights at Freddy’s”. Furthermore, the game uses nostalgic low-poly visuals to enhance the overall creepy experience. Ultimately, it perfectly balances terrifying encounters with hilarious, chaotic co-op moments.

The title already boasts impressive market success. Currently, more than 800 players have left reviews on Steam. This strong feedback could soon push the game to an “Overwhelmingly Positive” status. After all, the free demo already holds that prestigious badge with over 8,000 reviews.
Fortunately for console players, Shift at Midnight is not exclusively a PC game. Microsoft recently added the game to its July lineup for Xbox Game Pass.
