Reports recently surfaced that Xbox is considering shutting down Arkane Studios. Consequently, this move threatens the highly anticipated game, Marvel Blade. Over the last few months, Xbox has undergone massive restructuring. The company has executed multiple studio closures and widespread layoffs. Currently, Xbox is struggling to establish a clear identity in this console generation. Furthermore, the platform is failing to compete against rivals like Nintendo and PlayStation. Fans now face growing uncertainty regarding the release of several high-profile games.
Massive Xbox Restructuring & Studio Sales
Reportedly, Xbox might close Arkane as part of an ongoing, major company restructure. In fact, Arkane is reportedly one of five studios facing potential closure. However, Xbox could also sell the studio to keep it open. Neither Xbox nor Arkane has officially commented on these reports.
Xbox actively wants to sell several of its acquired development teams. Just last month, Ninja Theory announced a new Senua project specifically to attract a buyer. Rumors suggest that Double Fine, Compulsion Games, and Undead Labs face a similar situation. Previously, Xbox successfully found a buyer for Hi-Fi Rush developer Tango Gameworks in 2024. It remains unclear if the company will replicate this success with other studios. Arkane originally joined the Xbox family during the Bethesda and ZeniMax Media acquisition in 2021.
The Fate of Major Titles
History shows a grim trend for major Xbox exclusives. In 2025, Xbox canceled Perfect Dark five years after its initial announcement. Consequently, this cancellation caused the complete closure of developer The Initiative.
Now, Marvel Blade sits in a precarious position. Xbox announced the game several years ago. Full production finally kicked off in 2024. However, Xbox has provided no significant updates since the original reveal. Therefore, nobody knows the game’s exact development progress. This uncertainty directly impacts Xbox’s ability to find a buyer for Arkane.
Fans initially felt excited when Asha Sharma took over as the new Xbox boss. Unfortunately, recent weeks have brought a disappointing turn of events. Microsoft now faces a steep uphill battle to win back the trust of lapsed fans. Meanwhile, the company is actively developing a replacement for the Xbox Series X/S. Microsoft currently calls this upcoming hardware “Project Helix”.
