Cold Symmetry and PlayStack are gearing up for a massive launch. Mortal Shell 2 officially drops on August 20, 2026. The highly anticipated Soulslike sequel will hit PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Recently, the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) handed the game an official rating. As a result, fans can expect a much darker and bloodier experience this time around.
Mortal Shell 2 is a Bloody Step Up in Mature Content
The original Mortal Shell sold over one million copies after its August 2020 debut. It carried an ‘M’ rating. However, Mortal Shell 2 takes the mature content to a whole new level. The ESRB officially rated the sequel ‘M’ for “Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Strong Language, and Suggestive Themes”. Consequently, this marks a steep escalation. The first game lacked the “Intense” violence label. It also missed the strong language and suggestive themes tags entirely.
Players will step into the shoes of the “Harbinger”. Your mission involves hunting down mystical eggs across castles, forests, and dungeons. Furthermore, you will face human enemies, demons, golems, and zombies. Combat mixes traditional melee weapons, like axes and swords, with realistic firearms.
Because of this arsenal, the gore is extreme. Attacks trigger massive blood-splatter effects. Additionally, players can dismember or decapitate enemies, while some foes simply explode into blood. The game even features a harpy with exposed breasts, a nude bloated corpse, and a frequent use of the F-word.
Play the Free Steam Beta Right Now
You do not have to wait until late August to taste the action. Right now, PC players can jump into a free Open Beta on Steam. Therefore, you can experience the intense combat firsthand today.

This demo provides full access to the game’s prologue. It also opens up the early open world for roughly three hours of gameplay. During this trial, you can explore various dungeons. Moreover, you can test out several different “Shells”. These unique outfits grant special abilities and gameplay traits. Finally, the beta culminates in a battle against one truly formidable boss.
Sold Out PS5 Editions & Fierce Competition
Hype for the game is clearly skyrocketing. Just days after PlayStack revealed the August 20 release date and pricing, the PS5-exclusive Revered Editions completely sold out. This premium physical bundle packed serious value. It included a physical disc, a steelbook case, a collector’s box, an artbook, and fine art prints. Furthermore, buyers secured the Obsidian and Skeletal Harbinger pre-order skins.
Ultimately, Mortal Shell 2 needs this strong momentum. The late summer release window looks incredibly competitive. Early August brings heavy hitters like Beast of Reincarnation and Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls. Meanwhile, blockbuster games like Star Wars Zero Company, Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2, and Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy will launch just one week after Mortal Shell 2.
